Say What?

I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger.

If you're good at something, never do it for free.

You'll see, I'll show you, that when the chips are down, these uh... civilized people, they'll eat each other.

See, I'm a man of simple tastes. I like gunpowder...and dynamite...and gasoline!

Why don't we cut you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches? Hmm? Then we'll see, how loyal, a hungry dog really is. It's not about the money... it's about... sending a message. Everything burns.

You know what I am, Harvey? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do if I caught one.

Schemers trying to control their worlds. I am not a schemer. I show schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are.

Upset the established order, and everything turns to chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair."

This is what happens when an unstoppable force hits an immovable object.

Y'see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little...push.

~Joker

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.

You thought we could be decent men in an indecent world. But you were wrong; the world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is chance.

~Dent/Two-Face

Sometimes, truth isn't good enough, sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

~Batman

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight.

Monday Morning Rant: BK Diddy, The Two Coreys, Bale's Assault Charges, Obama Abroad and Criss Angel

It's Monday. I am back to work from a three day weekend and since I cannot, without reprocussions, bludgeon anyone, I thought I would rant for a few moments on some things that are EXTREMELY ANNOYING lately:

1. "Diddy says BK is open late" Have you seen this commercial? What is it with this guy? Way to stroke the already enflated Ego of this narcicistic hood. I don't give a shit what Diddy says about anything. I get the audience he is trying to reach, which is definately not me, but the ad is so annoying, even if I did eat fast food I wouldn't go there!

2. The Two Coreys. I don't know. This show was entertaining last season, but this season it's just a mess. Feldman and Susie are doing their own thing, Haim is continuing to struggle with the fact that he hasn't grown up and hasn't found the ability to be self-reliant. I can't tell if it's bad acting or just the sad afterlife of a child-star hearthrob. It's depressing. Glad Feldman is keeping his head above water, but it just makes me sad to watch Haim continue to self-distruct each week. It's heartbreaking, especially if it's all a stunt for a "reality show".

3. The tabloids as well as mainstream media like CBS, NBC and ABC are so hungry for celebrity news that they will tarnish the name of a beloved comic book superhero. Look, I love Christian Bale for his acting abilites, but he's an actor and therefore probably an asshole and a bit crazy. I dont want to know what he does in his personal life, I just want to get what I pay for when I go to see one of his films. All the fuss about his domestic dispute with his mother and sister has been blown out of proportion and has nothing to do with "The Dark Knight". STOP putting headlines out there that say "BATMAN ARRESTED" or " 'Batman' Out On Bail After Assault Arrest". Bale is NOT Batman. Batman is a character he played, just as he portrayed a psychotic killer in American Psycho. It's an obvious attempt at a ratings boost by the media and it makes me sick.

4. Obama gives speech to 200,000 in Germany. The Germans like Obama so much apparently they will to show up in droves to watch him speak. Of course, we all know what good judges of political character the German people are, right? Yea. Hey You-hooo!!! Obama! The people that have to power to put you in office are over here in North America! Did you forget that you are running for the position of PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? Not Germany, not Europe, not the World. Making some speeches in Europe doesn't mean that you now, all of a sudden, have the experience to lead our country in a global marketplace. This election is going to SUCK. I cannot stand EITHER candidate and we are fucked either way. I am moving to Scotland.

5. Criss Angel's new season of Mindfreak began last week. I DVRd it, (just like everything else) and watched it last night. His illusions are becoming campy and predictable. If he would do more slight of hand, which I feel is his strong suit, he would be more interesting to watch. Not only are his performances getting sloppy, but his looks are as well. He has gone from "weird hot" to "unibomber crack-head" since last season and he looks like he is on something. Perhaps the beard is all part of his act and in the next episode, which is live this week, he will pull his missing talent out of it! Great hiding spot Criss!

Well, that's it for me. Comments? Questions? Other annoyances? Anyone?

Batman 3: What will follow The Dark Knight?

With the huge success of the Dark Knight, there has been a lot of speculation out there about whether or not there will be a 3rd installment to the current Batman movies starring Christian Bale. I have my own theories and while it is premature to discuss since the sweat on Batman's brow is not even wiped away from this last adventure, I thought I would get myself on record. In the end it is really up to Christopher Nolan's creative team, and I am sure they already have stories cooked up. Take your time fellas, I will wait another 3 years if I have to (like we did for The Dark Knight) if it will be that good!

Look, of course they are being coy about storyline and if indeed Nolan will do a third movie, but with an opening weekend of kick ass box office returns you know it would be a dumb move to NOT do it. Nolan better get a grip on it, because if he doesn't want to do another one Warner Brother's will have someone else come in and it will ruin it...Even tho they have contracts for a thrid movie I would hope Bale will bow out, along with most of that cast, and then we would be stuck with another Jerry Bruckheimer catastrophe...just sayin'.

Nightmarish thoughts aside, here are my thoughts/predictions: (Oh, and sorry about the **Spoiler** . I marked it with a ** so you can highlight with your mouse to read it if you want. )

  • Theme: Batman Begins centered around "FEAR", The Dark Knight around "ESCALATION" and I agree with the idea that "REDEMPTION" will be the theme for the third movie. Batman, now on the run from everyone in Gotham, especially the police, will need to save the day and redeem himself so that bat signal will once again shine in the night sky over the city.
  • **Villian #1: Two-Face. Lots of good character groundwork was laid here to build upon for a third movie, of course there are varying thoughts on this. People who say that Harvey Dent Died in the movie are right, but Two-Face didn't die. Did anyone listen to the exchange between Gordon and Batman? Nolan is smart enough to not kill his villains (sorry Tim Burton).
  • Villian #2: Ra's Al Ghul disappeared in Begins, maybe he will come back to cash in on Batman's fall from grace with the people of Gotham? There are TONS of villians, but the first one that popped into my head that might work would be The Mad Hatter as long as they separate him from Jokerish tendencies: Mind control is his specialty... fitting in well with controlling the masses to continue to hate and hunt Batman. AND He would have interesting scenes with Two-Face because which mind would he control? HAHAH! Who would play him? Even tho Johnny Depp loves to wear hats he is not on my list, so how about my top three? Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Bettany or perhaps Jonathan Rys Meyers???
  • Who should NOT be Included? No Riddler because that character is too close to the Joker in many ways. I cannot see the Penguin being bad enough to warrent a storyline, Mr. Freeze is too far fetched. I love Catwoman, but I highly doubt it because Catwoman has already been done...twice. I would be upset if Bane made it in and they followed the storyline of the comics: he breaks Batman's back paralyzing him in a fight and some hack has to take over as Batman...um NO! Poison Ivy is annoying, Egghead? I don't think so, but there are many other villains to chose from!
  • Peripheral Villians: The Joker is out. Unfortunately noone can come close to Heath Ledger's performance, AND Nolan wouldn't rather let the Joker hang out in Arkham Asylum than reprise the role and ruin it. My idea is that there would be a glimpse of Arkham's dark hallways, and you hear that maniacal Joker laugh coming from a cell (which could be edited in from Heath Ledger's actual past performance)....Scarecrow would stick his head to the bars across the hall and yell something crazy back at him ... That would be a decent tribute I think, and about the only thing I would agree to them doing with Heath's Joker...
  • NO ROBIN! I will not stand for that crap! Christian Bale says there will be no Robin, and I am with him on that. Just say NO to the bird boy!
  • Love Interest: In my opinion the story doesn't necessarily need one, altho we all enjoy a good damsel in distress. I think he would be too scarred to get into another relationship after Dark Knight. Whatever happens I hope they don't throw in a "Chase Meridian" style character who happens to be dating Bruce at the time and gets caught in the crossfire! That would SUCK. If anything, an introduction of Selina Kyle would be the most doable, but let's do something different. What about Talia Al Ghul? Especially if Ra's comes back...
  • I hope they revisit Wayne Manor and the Batcave! It's about time that place was rebuilt and utilized again!

OK, so I have gone on record finally, since I had thoughts of this before The Dark Knight came out. I was right on with the premise for Indiana Jones (except for the alien shit and the fact that it SUCKED monkey brains), SO let's see how I do with this!!

Thanks for sticking with me through Batman Week #2!!!

What do you think the 3rd Batman will entail?

And Here We...GO!

The Dark Knight. What can I say? The midnight showing Thursday night was entirely worth sitting in a theater for almost 2 1/2 hours waiting for the 2 hour and 35 minute movie to start! 5 screens were sold out by noon Thursday afternoon, they added 3 more screens and over 1900 tickets had been sold in our Theater! The audience was pumped but as soon as the movie started you could hear a pin drop. It was AMAZING, I have NEVER sat with such a respectful audience before! For ONCE, a movie has met my high expectations! Lets run through what I thought, and don't worry, I will be nice and leave out any spoilers.

The Story:
The Main story and sub plots were well crafted and easy to follow considering their complexity and the mythology behind them. We follow Bruce/Batman as he struggles with duality, the rise of the villainous Joker, and the newly elected DA Harvey Dent and how they all fit together in Gotham's puzzled population. The Dark Knight is fast paced, and full of surprises, no joke...

There is a lot going on in this film, so much that I am now hoping to see it more than the two times I originally thought it would warrant. Batman fans will love references to comics, the viral marketing campaign and the previous movie. I would not recommend this movie for children under 13 because of the violence and the overall idea that they will not comprehend the motivation behind the actions of some of the characters.

Filming:
On location in Chicago, using real stunts in place of CGI in places you never thought possible and beautiful building top shots of the city, these guys packed it all in. The action shots were much more polished than in Batman Begins and once again the story really lent itself to grand camera angels.

Acting:
Christian Bale was great as usual, but I must say that his "Batman Voice" was a bit much sometimes. Batman had more screen time and more lines this time around tho, lending to my observation. I think they have positioned the Bruce Wayne character as the Main Identity, so that would make sense that Bruce is more finely tuned than Batman.

Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was excellent. He brought a depth to the character that many might overlook because of other outstanding performances in this film. I was really impressed by Aaron's take on this character, and in my opinion, he was right on.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was fine, but her part was not very well developed, possibly because the development of Rachel Dawes was on the shoulders of Katie Holmes originally in Batman Begins, which was never fully realized. Maggie had some back peddling to do, but she was a fine addition to the talented cast. She grew on me.

Gary Oldman is still the man. It is cool to see him as the good guy, adding to the range of roles he can play. Oldman remains so even with his characterization of Jim Gordon that he is very endearing. The development of Gordon in this installment was well thought out and played.

Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman were wonderful in their supporting roles as usual. Michael Caine, still embodied what Alfred Pennyworth is: The voice of reason, the guidance, the father figure and the protector of Gotham's Protector. Lucius showed us again that he is a man of principle, strong values and a great ally to Bruce.

Did I miss someone, you ask? Why NO! I Was Saving the BEST for LAST!

Heath Ledger ROCKED. The Joker was such a complex and meaty role, and he took full advantage of it without being over the top. He was funny, he was scary and he was downright demented. You couldn't take your eyes off of him and waited in anticipation until he was next on screen. The Joker drew you into his psyche like a moth to a flame, which made him more believable as an anarchistic agent of chaos. Heath was SO AMAZING and SO CONSISTENT that I feel The Joker was the defining role of his career and it breaks my heart.

The Music:
A Score from Hans Zimmer again. A rehash of Batman Begins themes, and not much new, the movie utilized a lack of music in a few scenes to create feelings of anxiety and suspense. I distinctly remember a chase scene where there was no music. It literally made me stop and think, "What is missing here? Oh, No Music? That's weird...hmmmm... Actually this fits really well here, and is doing it's job to make me stay on the edge of my seat!" (Yes, I actually was thinking all of that!)Anywho, it actually worked for me, and I appreciated it. Sometimes movies can overuse music, so this was noticeable but well done.

Conclusion:
I am looking forward to seeing this movie again (a few more times) so that I can concentrate on some of the subtle parts that I felt I couldn't pay as much attention to because of the sheer charisma that Heath Ledge brought to the screen. The audience clapped when it was done. Whistles and shouts of "AWESOME!" and "THAT ROCKED!" filled the air. All I could say was "WOW" because it's been a long time since I saw a movie this good, and watched it with an audience this well behaved! This movie blew my mind and blew away the opening weekend sales records as well. (stick that up your ass George Lucas!)

Thank you Christopher Nolan (and cast) for bringing Batman back to life on the big screen in a HUGE way!!

Midnight Showing of The Dark Knight

BRAVO!!!

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Why is Batman is My Favorite? Character.

Everyone has a favorite superhero, right? Mine of course is Batman. From a very young age and the insanely campy Batman Series that I watched in re-runs in the early 80's, I was in love with Batman. I was in love with Zorro too, so maybe I had an unhealthy attraction to men wearing masks all dressed in black, but I digress...

Why is Batman my favorite? It's not the millionaire playboy, or the cool gadgets or the awesome wheels, because every superhero has something like that. What does Batman have that they don't? He is human. He has no special powers due to an accident or because he comes from another planet. Bruce Wayne is a man. A man with conviction and character.

When Bruce Wayne loses both of his parents at a young age at the hands of a killer he is plagued with thoughts of guilt and revenge. He grows up under guidance of Alfred Penneyworth, goes to college and finally disappears for about 7 years.
He's not living it up in the French Riviera like most millionaires would be, he is traveling the world, learning what he can about various combat skills and fighting styles, the memory of his parent's death spurring him on.

On his return to Gotham city, he learns more about his skills, his purpose and how distructive a vengeful heart can be. Although he struggles to lift himself out of retaliation, he realizes that he, an ordinary man, CAN have power over evil. He CAN use his skills to protect the citizens of Gotham. His fight becomes not only for the memory of his slain parents, but for every living person in Gotham.

Sure Superman has super strength, Spiderman can swing from webs and scale walls and the Fantastic 4 are well, "Fantastic", but would any of them be able to do what Batman does without all their special powers? Batman has honed his human skills physically AND mentally to keep up with the super-powers in other comic book universes. There is something to be said about the focus and commitment to a cause when you have to work harder than anyone elsebecause you have no special aides!

Yes, we are talking about a comic book character who has become larger than life on the big screen, but it's not about the costume or the gadgets. What is most important is what this character stands for in reality's terms. It's all about strength in character, resolve to do what's right and the commitment to a cause. These are things that all of us as HUMANS can strive for.

Bruce Wayne takes advantage of his assets, educates himself and returns to his home to do what is right. He is not afraid to get out there (kick some ass) and stand up for what he believes in. He has strong family ties, and respects the advice and guidance given to him by his faithful butler and family friend Alfred.

Batman is my favorite because of the idea that he is human and achieves extraordinary things. He works hard, respects others and never backs down. Men with CHARACTER like that are hard to find, and now you know why, even as an adult , I am still a fan of Batman.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I *do* that defines me."

Christian Bale

With the release of The Dark Knight only 1 week away I thought I would do a post about the talented Christian Bale. I have enjoyed his work long before he became my favorite super hero and he continues to impress me with film choices and acting abilities.

Here are some facts and quotes regarding this versatile and insightful actor.

Interesting Facts:

A devoted animal lover, Christian has two dogs [Mojo and Ramone] and three cats [Miriam, Molly, and Lilly], which are all strays that he found.

The nameplate on his trailer for Batman Begins (2005) read "Bruce Wayne" as opposed to Bale's name.

If he plays an American character, he will use an American accent in all the interviews related to the film. He says he does this so the audience isn't confused. He admitted that because Batman is "such an American icon", he had decided not to perform his promotional interviews for the movie Batman Begins (2005) in his natural mixed Welsh/British accent. He instead spoke in an almost-inflection less mid-American accent, only revealing his dialectic roots with a few words.

Quotes:

"I think there's a kind of pretentiousness to the idea that serious work is only found in low-budget independent movies--I can't stand that snobbery."

"I always like that. Whenever there's a project where everyone's going, "Oooooh, it's a bit dodgy", I always like it. If you actually look at it, there tends not to be anything risky at all. Why did I start acting in the first place? I didn't do it to be mediocre or to please everybody all the time."

"I like being kept in the dark myself. You know, like mushrooms: Keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em shit. See, I think that's an enjoyable vegetable to be."

"At first, I was somewhat hesitant to do the role [Batman Begins (2005)]. I mean, after all, Batman is an icon. But I remember, as clear as day, being at the grocery store the day the movie opened, and this little boy saw me. He couldn't have been more than five years old. He just walked right up to me and hugged me. He hugged me, and I was so moved by it that I hugged him back. Then he looked up at me and said, "You're my hero." And in that moment, I knew that not only as an actor that I had done my job, but that I had made the right decision to play Batman. And I've never looked back on my the decision to play Batman since."

"It's the actors who are prepared to make fools of themselves who are usually the ones who come to mean something to the audience."

Every Day is Exactly the Same

I believe I can see the future
Cause I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
Then again
That might have been a dream

I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
And I just do what I've been told
I really don't want
Them to come around

Oh no

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no Love here
And there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again
Sometimes I think I'm happy here
Sometimes
Yet I still pretend

I can't remember how this got started
But I can tell you
Exactly
How it will end

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no Love here
And there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

WANTED

James McAvoy is awesome. He's also Scottish. He totally got his ass kicked and kicked some ass in return in this movie. I loved it and him. It's a shame that Jolie got all the press for her supporting role. He deserved a bigger slice of that pie in my opinion. I think we will be seeing a lot more of him in the future, at least I hope so!

A sidenote on McAvoy: IMDB reports that he will be playing Bilbo Baggins in the new Hobbit Movie! VERY COOL. I also want to go on record as nominating James to replace Toby McGuire (if he won't do it) as Spiderman in the 4th movie. Just sayin'...

Anywho, I will preface this glowing review with the fact that it is extremely violent and graphic. What makes it work is the humor that is interjected by the characters. I litterally laughed out loud so many times I lost count!

An interesting story told at a fast pace, Wanted delivered. This fun, far-fetched story about a Fraternity of Assassins charged with carrying out the orders of Fate was great entertainment. Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie and a bunch unknowns like the "Repairman" and the "Gunsmith" were excellent. The special effects and stunts were AMAZING. Timing, script and cinematography were well molded to this action packed movie.

It is Rated R because of violence, language and sexuality, so the kiddies, the mentally ill and those who are easily influenced to recreate movie scenes in reality should be left at home. If you can handle the graphic violence in this movie, get thee to a theater and see this on the big screen.

Portions of the story will hit home with everyone, namely the age old questions we all ask ourselves: "Who am I?" "What am I here for?/What is my purpose?" Most importantly, I saw this movie as a CALL TO ACTION, a flamingo moment ala "Wonderfalls" if you will, screaming at the audience to "GET OFF YOUR ASS!". Especially the last line of the movie: (sorry about the possible spoliers here):

"This *is* me taking control, from Sloan, from the Fraternity, from Janis, billing reports, ergonomic keyboards, from cheating girlfriends and sack of shit best friends. This is me taking back control of my life. What the fuck have you done lately?"

RUSH Concert: July 5th 2008

Can I just tell you how much I enjoyed RUSH the second time around? Sure I saw them in September of 2007, for the same tour, but they totally mixed it up and added some new stuff which made it that much more awesome!

My nephews and sister-in-law invited me to join them again and this time Nate accompanied us. Tom got some great pics throughout our journey so I thought I would doctor them up a bit and post a little silly timeline here on the blog.

5 P.M. We stopped to eat our subs for dinner at a park before the concert:
Kim and Nate: What a nice picture!

CC, Tom and Kevin deep in thought.

6:15-6:45 P.M. While waiting in line to be admitted to the concert Tom took a few pics and I couldn't resist:

Aunt CC tries her best to embarrass her nephews and easily just makes herself look even worse...nice!?

7:00-8:00 P.M. Tom and Kevin had the camera at their seats inside. (Kim, Nate and I were out on the lawn) Looks like they were getting a contact high inside as well!

8 P.M. - And some serious pics Tom took at the concert of RUSH! Great job Tom!
Geddy is sooo CUTE the way he bops around, runs, jumps and sways on stage. This guy loves what he does and it shows! (No Getty, Thank YOU!!!) I was bummed he wasn't wearing his Chucks Taylor's, but he totally KILLED on the bass. I think he was more "on" and let it loose more in this concert than in Ottowa back in September. The man seriously ROCKED!!!

Ah, Neil is the MASTER on those drums! Watching him play is like watching a superhuman. "Damn!!" and "HOLY SHIT!" commonly come out of my mouth when I watch him. He is so amazing I just can't even put into words how much respect I have for him as a percussionist.

Alex is my dude! I LOVE to watch him play. The passion he plays with that I could always hear, I have now literally SEEN in him on stage (twice)! He truly speaks through his instruments (guitars etc). With all that energy and emotion, he gave me chills!!!

Ha! This was taken during my favorite song off their new album: Working Them Angels!!!! AWESOME!!!!!

These guys ROCK, they love what they do, they still have the fire and are wonderfully entertaining. I am so glad I could see them again. What a great start to my summer! (Thanks Kim and company!)
